What is a Cerebral Bypass?
A cerebral bypass creates a new blood supply route to the brain by connecting a scalp artery (typically the superficial temporal artery) to a brain artery (typically a branch of the middle cerebral artery). This is known as an STA-MCA bypass.
Types of Bypass
- Direct bypass (STA-MCA): Direct artery-to-artery connection
- Indirect bypass (EDAS, EMS): Placing vascularized tissue on the brain surface to promote new vessel growth
- High-flow bypass: Using a graft for larger volume blood flow
- Combined approaches: Using multiple techniques for optimal revascularization

- Moyamoya disease: Progressive narrowing of brain arteries
- Complex giant aneurysms: Requiring parent vessel sacrifice
- Tumors encasing blood vessels: Requiring vessel sacrifice during resection
