    Cerebral Bypass Surgery

    What is a Cerebral Bypass?

    A cerebral bypass creates a new blood supply route to the brain by connecting a scalp artery (typically the superficial temporal artery) to a brain artery (typically a branch of the middle cerebral artery). This is known as an STA-MCA bypass.

    Types of Bypass

    • Direct bypass (STA-MCA): Direct artery-to-artery connection
    • Indirect bypass (EDAS, EMS): Placing vascularized tissue on the brain surface to promote new vessel growth
    • High-flow bypass: Using a graft for larger volume blood flow
    • Combined approaches: Using multiple techniques for optimal revascularization

    Conditions Requiring Bypass

    • Moyamoya disease: Progressive narrowing of brain arteries
    • Complex giant aneurysms: Requiring parent vessel sacrifice
    • Tumors encasing blood vessels: Requiring vessel sacrifice during resection
    • Chronic cerebrovascular insufficiency: Inadequate blood flow to the brain
